A workshop on disordered eating, poor body image, and how you can help as a teacher
Since the pandemic, eating disorders and disordered eating have risen sharply. Often, educators notice behaviours in school before parents are even aware there is a problem. Teachers are reporting whole classes of elementary students who are throwing out their lunches, engaging in restriction, and commenting negatively on their bodies. What can you do when you see these troubling warning signs in your students?
This workshop will steer you in the right direction and provide resources to foster body positive conversations with your students, work effectively with parents, and help shape your school culture to embrace Health At Every Size (HAES).
Sue Huff is the Parent Mentor and Trainer at the Alberta Wellness Center for Eating Disorders, former Executive Director for the Eating Disorder Support Network of Alberta, and the parent of a child who has recovered from a serious eating disorder. She credits the teachers in her child’s school as being the first to raise the alarm and provide a safe environment to resume schooling after treatment.
