I had the privilege of serving on the Edmonton Public School Board with Sue from 2007-2010. During that time Sue displayed many attributes that make her an outstanding candidate for elected office. She had a highly defined sense of integrity, openly identifying her principles, clearly articulating her arguments and constantly reflecting the values of her constituents. People knew where Sue Huff stood on an issue. She fought tirelessly to create increased accountability for all Trustees by moving more discussions and decisions from behind closed doors into the public forum. This work was not easy but her arguments stimulated the Board to make changes in this area. Public Board debates were generated around the themes of accountability and transparency. Sue was never afraid to take on the hard issues even though it was occasionally evident that the outcome might be not favourable. For Sue it was critical that an issue be openly discussed and debated regardless of the outcome of the vote. In this, she displayed the wisdom of knowing that change often did not take place overnight…that seeds of reflection had to be planted. Sue displayed tenacity and courage embracing the need for change in the conservative environment of education. Her intelligence, energy, principles and vision make her exactly the kind of political leader that we need in order to effectively respond to the challenges of the 21st century.

Four key attributes of an Alberta Party Candidate to become our representative in the Legislature are intent, commitment, collaboration and capacity.

Sue demonstrates all of these attributes, and has done so throughout her time as a representative of the people in her neighbourhood while serving them on the school board, and while serving as the interim leader of our Party.

Her intent to bring civility back to political discourse as a representative of the people is well known and very much appreciated.

Sue’s commitment to Listening as the foundation of elected service is unswerving and she has demonstrated this many, many times over these past years in elected office. She lives this value and is modeling the way for so many of us in the Alberta Party.

Collaboration is the key to winning an election and then afterwards to build good policy and find the right solutions for the challenges that she will face in office. The ability to work within the framework of party politics without getting sucked into the old school way of doing things will be key to doing politics differently, doing politics collaboratively and ultimately doing politics the Alberta Party way.

Sue has the capacity to lead; she has the capacity to represent your interests in a manner that will make all of us proud. Sue has the capacity to be the change that we are all looking for in the legislature.

Some people really have contempt for elected officials and for candidates. And so, when they find a candidate that seems real to them, it can be really powerful.

So in the end I think it comes down to the value that Sue represents best, authenticity. Instead of just talking about her policy positions or trying to be all things to all people, Sue is willing to talk about what her convictions are, what her values are, and what she holds dear. People are craving authenticity and Sue represents all that is authentic about elected representation.

I am looking forward to continuing to work with Sue as she continues to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield – as our candidate for Edmonton Glenora.

My name is Peter Bailey. I’m Director of the St. Albert Public Library. I live in Westmount where I run into Sue at school council meetings, community league meetings and so on.

We’re been neighbours of Sue and Kevin since 2001, and our kids go to school together. But I really got to know Sue playing ball hockey at Westglen school with the group Sue and Kevin organized. You can really learn a lot about a person when you’re sitting on a bench next to them, covered in sweat, gasping for breath, wondering if the pounding in your heart is completely normal.

At hockey I learned that Sue is tough, tenacious and a team-builder.

Tough? This attractive sometimes-blonde woman? Absolutely. A word of advice to opponents of Sue: keep your head up. Going into a corner against Sue? Keep your elbows up! Whenever a new guy shows up to play ball hockey I watch to see how they treat Sue. Usually their first time going into a corner against her to get the ball they are confident of their success, treating her gingerly. Inevitably Sue comes out of the corner with the puck and the guy limps back to the bench with a shocked look on his face. Sue’s political opponents have also learned the error of underestimating Sue.

At hockey I learned that Sue is fiercely tenacious. She goes up against the biggest guys along the boards and will absolutely refuse to give up the puck. Sue does not give up the fight. It doesn’t matter the size of the opponent. I’ve seen this in Sue’s fight to save our local school. She didn’t care if the odds were stacked against her. She fought and kept fighting and she won.

At hockey, in a gym full of testosterone, Sue shows all the big guys the power of estrogen – she’s both a natural leader and a team player. Fearless. Loyal. One year we had a guy who was taking big, booming slapshots at the goalies. Not allowed, but all the guys said nothing. Not Sue. She gave this guy a warning. When it continued she walked up to him and said “You’re done”. And he was. We never saw him again. Sue has your back. She will stick up for you. She is completely unafraid to speak truth to power. So Ted Morton? Ron Liepert? Look out – “You’re done”.

Sue has been an inspiration from the moment I had the chance to work with her.

She embodies what I would look for in an MLA.
- She is grounded in a values-based approach to everything she does.
- She is an amazing communicator and someone who will always collaborate with her constituents to get answers and work on solutions.
- She embodies the goal of the Alberta Party to sincerely do things differently. From outreach to constituents and organizations that are often underrepresented, to providing new ideas and solutions that have yet to be tried in our current form of governance.
- She can be trusted to do the hard work required by a truly caring representative, and will be a trusted and authentic MLA for all constituents.

I wholeheartedly recommend and endorse her as our Alberta Party nominated candidate for Edmonton Glenora.

After seven years in opposition in the Alberta Legislature and a 30-year career in media, I have a bit of cynic in me. But when it comes to Sue Huff, the cynicism disappears and all that’s left is optimism.

It is truly my pleasure to offer my endorsement to Sue Huff for MLA of Edmonton-Glenora.

The people of Edmonton-Glenora deserve a great MLA, and Sue simply refuses to settle for anything less than the best in the province and in herself.

As Acting Leader of the Alberta Party Sue set an incredible example. Her ability to understand and respond to questions consistently and coherently revealed a person of both compassion and commitment. Sue has always been a strong advocate for the vulnerable – especially during her time as an Edmonton Public School Board Trustee – and believes that in a province like Alberta everyone should have the chance to succeed.

Sue is the real deal. Her number one goal is to restore democracy to Alberta’s government and create a healthy Legislature where opinions are respected and good ideas used. This is a person that should be in the Legislature, and it’s up to us to make sure she gets there. So let’s do it!

I met Sue Huff when we were both elected to the Board of Directors for the Alberta Party. I got to know her and her leadership and working style better over the course of the past year and particularly as she was our Acting Leader. But nothing brings people together like rolling up the sleeves and getting to work! I got to know Sue very well as we worked together on the Party’s Leadership Convention in May.

For those of you who live in the Edmonton Glenora constituency, I’m excited for you. Truly. I think the coming election campaigns will be taken to a new hopeful, respectful, and ideas-driven level with Sue in the running.

The Alberta Party is sometimes criticized for being all about rainbows and kittens and these silly things called ideals. And Sue and I have, on more than one occasion, asked ourselves, is there something wrong with ideals? Is there something wrong with believing we can do better? And we decided that, no, there isn’t. Maybe we’ve just been trained to expect negativity in politics, and to think that anything positive and hopeful must be ridiculous and silly.

But, honestly, that stops now. I think that Sue Huff has the makings of a fantastic candidate and an even better MLA.

She’s not afraid of asking questions. She wants to learn more about the issues. She also, probably more importantly, wants to learn more about what people think of the issue. Whether it’s a colleague, a different party, an expert in a particular field, someone on the street. She’s looking for information and perspectives and I think that’s critical for someone making important decisions about issues that affect our lives.

Sue is absolutely committed to working in an open and honest and transparent manner. She has nothing to hide. And that comes through clearly when you work with her. She builds trust with people that way. And trust doesn’t always walk hand-in-hand with politics. I think one of the reasons she works so well with the Party both as a Board member and as our acting leader is because she so obviously shares our Party’s democratic values: public business should be conducted in public, governance should involve the people it governs, and government is accountable.

Finally, and I say this with respect, Sue knows her place. She knows that the job of MLA is not about power or influence or helping out her buddies. It’s not about getting her way by fear mongering or threatening a tax hike. It’s about representing people. It’s about listening to what they say and representing those voices in the Legislative Assembly. It’s a simple job, really, when you look at it like that…MLAs represent people. But it’s not easy and Sue knows that. She just has the guts and determination and skills and attitude to do it and do it well.

I’m thrilled to have had this chance to tell you why I think Sue would make a fantastic MLA. She represents the Party that I believe in in such an honourable way. I know she’ll represent her constituency neighbours in the same way.

As a parent advocacte, I thoroughly enjoyed working with Sue on School Board issues. I admired her dedication and determination to get to the bottom of questions, including when issues were complex and when answers were not easy nor popular. Sue consistently served not only her own constituents but the entire district, enabling families to have their voices heard more clearly. The district continues to benefit from Sue’s vision of more openness and accountability at both the Board and administrative levels. I’ll continue to follow her “adventures”

as she transitions from Alberta Party’s Acting Leader to Candidate for Edmonton Glenora.

As the public school trustee for Ward C, Sue Huff revealed her ability to get to the crux of a problem and suggest win-win solutions. In a time when compromise and collaboration are needed if we are to move forward on issues such as the environment, funding for health care and education, I believe Sue has what it takes to be the next representative for Edmonton-Glenora.

I’m a conservative by principle who is “crossing the floor” to endorse Sue Huff. She is someone Alberta MUST HAVE in her Legislative Assembly. I was raised when from 2 – 24 years old my father, Eldon M Woolliams was in Canada’s House of Commons, serving for a record number of years as Justice Critic. I met all the Members of Parliament and even Heads of State like Indira Gandhi and talked to her one on one. Sue Huff glows! She really brings inspiration to her thoughts, words, and deeds – the kind that comes from heaven. She will know instinctively what to do for people and view her work for you as an enlightened sacred calling. You and I, indeed all Alberta will be uplifted at her every contribution to our most urgent and pressing needs. She will help build what is truly worthy – this I know with all my heart!
